New Treatment Center

Hi everybody! Sorry that it's been so long. We've been staying incredibly busy but also haven't really had any news-worthy updates in a few weeks.
Today marks the start of Sam's second round of chemotherapy and his first round in Duke's brand-new 235 million dollar cancer center. We were eager to see how it turned out and I can now tell you that it is phenomenal. Sam is bummed that I didn't take my camera today but - don't you worry! - we'll be back tomorrow and I'll be sure to snap a few pictures. The treatment facility is 10,000 time more comfortable than it was before, with private rooms, windows, and awesome new recliners (for the visitors too!!). There is even an outside terrace that they will allow you to sit at (for short periods of time) while you are receiving treatment! I know it may not sound like much, but those little things plus being in a brand new (and clean!) facility can really do wonders for your comfort level. Sam has even been able to sleep for most of today's treatment since he isn't surrounded by other people's beeping IV poles and alarms. I don't dare to sleep for fear that he will have some sort of crazy reaction and I won't see it (but let's face it... as uncomfortable as I am these days I doubt I'd be able to sleep much anyway). Speaking of reactions... Sam has handled the last round very, very well with only minimal symptoms and side effects. He's a bit more tired and had a few issues with a mouth sore but hasn't suffered from much nausea. He did develop a drug rash a few weeks ago that runs from his shoulders to his ankles and causes him a bit of itching and discomfort, but other than that he seems to be handling everything quite well.

We can not possible express our gratitude for all of the love and support that we have received from all of you over these past few months. We have never felt alone through this and know that is the reason we are able to keep such a positive outlook! We love you all!

  2. You're so right, Alex -- all those "little" environmental improvements make a "big" difference to patients and families. So glad you and Sam can by more physically and emotioally at peace during his treatments. Hope you had a wonderful, relaxing and restorative week-end away!
    Love, Aunt Marianne
