Lots of changes

The new year has brought with it a lot of struggles, but we are confident that things are going to work out for us. We have an amazing support system of friends, family and community members that are helping us cope with life.

If you aren't aware, after many doctors appointments and frustration, my husband was diagnosed with Cancer late last year (read more - Sam's Diagnosis). After getting Sam's latest test results back, the doctor has suggested a treatment course. We have lots of faith in him and have decided to go with his recommendation. He has seen long periods of remission with this type of treatment, so we are hopeful that this will work for Sam! He will be starting a clinical trial that consists of a 16 week regimen of Rituximab (a monoclonal antibody) and Bendamustine (a chemotherapy agent) followed by a testing period and several treatments of Zevalin (a monoclonal antibody/radiation therapy combination). He will also be treated with a few other drugs to ensure that he doesn't develop Tumor Lysis SyndromeWe are waiting to hear about scheduling but if all of his testing on the 24th goes well, then he should be starting treatment on February 2nd.

Just today I stumbled upon a recently and a not-so-recently published article discussing this treatment regimen. Check them out if you have the time.

Many of you have asked about Sam's spirits. The only answer that I have is that they are as good as can be expected. He's taking this all pretty well, although he has his concerns with side effects from the upcoming chemo and being able to continue working throughout treatment. The fact that we will be bringing home a new baby right smack dab in the middle of all of this is adding to the stress level of everyone. So, we haven't fallen apart, but we do have our days where we struggle. I don't think that is going to change anytime soon.

Speaking of the new arrival. I am now 5 months pregnant and (at least for

Baby S
the time being) on bedrest. The doctors consider me at risk for preterm labor and the little one is also measuring a little smaller than they'd like her to. Right now, that means increased monitoring and ultrasounds and taking it easy. Easier than it sounds, I promise. There have been days where I wished for nothing to do except lie in bed and now I've got my wish. Sort of. The problem is, I don't have "nothing" to do. I have tons to do! I have two kids and two dogs to take care of, and a husband who works his butt off all day. And you want me to what? Stay in bed? I know that it is best, and I will do what needs to be done to take care of this tiny little person, but who's going to take care of everything else?

The kids have been amazing and strong and such big helpers to both Sam and I throughout all of this news and I hope that you will all keep them in your thoughts as well. They are both healthy and doing very well in school! We all really love living here in Cary and are getting used to life in our new town.

We love and appreciate all of the support that everyone has given through this difficult phase and will continue to keep you updated as the days go by. XOXO

I love it when they dress themselves.
